The Problem

More killings, more crime, more school drop outs, more drug users, and no black economic structure to solve the problems of our community. Why? When?

The problem, while beginning much earlier, was built into the legal foundation of our country in 1786 when the US Constitution was created:

  • "…which shall be determined by adding to the whole number of free persons, including those bound to service for a term of years, and excluding Indians not taxed, three fifths of all other persons."
  • "No person held to service or labor in one state, under the laws thereof, escaping into another, shall, in consequence of any law or regulation therein, be discharged from such service or labor, but shall be delivered up on claim of the party to whom such service or labor may be due."
And the problem continues today from your fundamentalist constitutionalists or your states rights people. You can look on the internet and read for yourself of their desire to return to the constitution as originally written.

Author Dr. Claud Anderson, in "PowerNomics" and "Black Labor White Wealth" expounds masterfully on the problem. Let me share a few of his points.

"Not one Black neighborhood in America has a Black business economy upon which its members can depend to supply its residents with their daily necessities, products, services or jobs.…The civil rights movement of the 1960s was destructive to urban Black communities in many aspects. Black America would have been much better off had the movement equipped Blacks to be their own job and product producers rather than seekers of the jobs and products of others. If Blacks had become production oriented rather than consumption oriented, there is little likelihood that today they would have a hidden national unemployment rate of 34 per cent, and live in neighborhoods rather than communities.

Today, Black neighborhoods are totally dependent upon Whites and other competing groups to supply the products, services and employment needs of Black neighborhoods.
Unique Needs of Our Community

Quoting an article in our local community newspaper, we find a story I am sure you have heard bemoaned many a time: "I find it disheartening that our Black Brain-trust and intellectuals, who virtually read from the very same script, cannot overcome their egos long enough to cooperate with one another and assist the rest of us, out of our collective malaise….Although we are continually plagued with the external impediments (white supremacy and institutionalized racism) against our efforts to build a proper Black community, it has been our internalized impediments (centuries of meritorious manumission and 'Willie Lynchism' that was indoctrinated within us) that keep us divided and powerless".

Leaders such as Dr. Claud Anderson have eloquently explained the need for the Black community to work together and aggregate our economic and political power. Most contemporary Blacks recognize this need. However, we have all heard of the 'crabs in a barrel' syndrome, and many wonder how we can get our people to work together after so many generations of slavery and Jim Crowe have inculcated distrust, envy, self-hatred.
